Brilliant book but morally challenged
This book is an entertaining and comprehensive examination of how people are manipulated, often by seemingly minor factors. It focuses on web interface design, but delves into advertising and many other social phenomenon. It is an enjoyable and surprisingly compulsive read. The book "addresses" the ethical problems inherent in manipulating people, but largely to diminish their importance or to call them into question. I often wondered if the irony was intended, but, having reached the end if the book, I see it is not. Certainly manipulation and deception may occasionally be helpful. The author offers reassuring children and aiding demented seniors as examples. But in the end he presents a justification of influencing and deceiving people to do things that they would not choose to do if they were not deceived and manipulated. His attitude is that it is a personal choice how far one chooses to push manipulation, observing that too much manipulation can backfire, but basically giving a thumbs up to preying on customers and users where you can get away with it.This book is best read as a guide to common practices of deception and how to recognize and avoid them. It has made me look at the common web page with a great deal more discernment and it has reinforced my intention not to let myself be taken advantage of.

I wish professors would choose this as their textbook! SO GOOD!
I don't think there has EVER been a book on software/web design that is as practical and actionable as Chris Nodder's Evil by Design! While the premise (the 7 Deadly Sins) might seem kind of gimmicky (or evil!), Nodder uses it to organize the content into relevant chapters and to keep the material highly entertaining.(Plus, he definitely discusses the ethics of employing all of these tools.)A few of the tips and tricks might be familiar to you, but I was surprised at how many weren't to me. Sure, I'd seen them, and when Nodder pointed out what they were doing, it then seemed obvious... but I had never noticed before.GREAT BOOK. BUY IT. If you're a professor, please consider using this as a wonderful alternative to stuffy textbooks.

This is such an excellent book. I got it because I wanted to understand UX better for my own work as a process analyst, but what it gave me is a wealth of information about how to avoid getting caught in the various traps used by web designers and marketers, as well as avoid scams... Yes, scams, they use the same techniques!Id recommended this book for anyone, not just those that want to learn about user experience and/or design

Great book full of real life experience and real science to back up assertions. It was cheeky in it's presentation of information worth knowing, and changed how I see and build websites.

Great read for design, UX, CRO, and marketing
Absolutely fantastic. I run CRO and UX and this is easily one of the top books I've read on the subject. Very worthy of following Design of Everyday Things.

The book is 5/5, but delivery was off the mark...
Great book and highly recommend.*Not sure why, but the first time I ordered the book it was bent quite severely, so I sent it back because I thought it was due to the lack of padding in the box it came with. The second time when the replacement came, it had enough padding but the book was still slightly damage at a corner, I suppose it wasn't handled with care at the warehouse.
