Good reference book for getting through Hard Times
For various reasons leaders, almost world-wide, are making life difficult; it's something never seen before. Books, like this one, contain great lessons on how people made it through the Great Depression. Recommended.

Really basic recipes
First thing I noticed was how there was no table of contents or appendix. It makes it more challenging to find the right recipe. However the book is really thin so skimming through it doesn't take very long. This would be okay for someone just starting out. However, it might be nice for a college student or someone moving out for the first time.

I came across this book when I was trying to find something similar to "Clara's Kitchen"--a GREAT memoir and recipe book that I re-read every few months and often cook from. This book came up as a "similar item". But it's not at all similar. It's almost funny--not only do I have ONE copy of this book, but because of a wish-list error, I ended up with TWO copies. Not at all what I expected--as others have mentioned, very poorly edited and organized. It is a short (95 page) volume with a rambling narrative and vague hints of recipes here and there. Some are more complete than others, but in the "Homemade Desserts" chapter, this is the drive-by allusion you get to cookies (punctuated exactly like this): "Basic cookie baking. Dropped cookies bake at 350 to 400 for about 10 minutes". Not a terribly helpful recipe for cookies there---Or Meatloaf: "Mix your meat, about four pounds of hamburger with three pieces of bread not toasted, crumbled, three eggs, one onion chopped, and shaped into a loaf and put in oven. On top of this, pour tomato catsup and smooth out with knife. May cover with aluminum foil and bake."Some of the recipes are lists of items with or without amounts, some are in paragraph forms with scanty directions. If it had been edited well, it could have been a charming, conversational tone, but it's so random that it lacks any kind of flow. I am going to re-read the book to see if there is anything that I can glean from it, but for the most part, I think BOTH copies are going to go straight to the thrift store as a donation. Very disappointed.I highly recommend "Clara's Kitchen" by Clara Cannucciari.

Editing needed
It would be much easier to read and understand this book if it had been edited.

Stuff you probably knew but forgot, and a few ways to do things faster
This book brought back memories of my mother and grandmother on cooking. Some of it I remembered after I read about it. Some items are a simpler way to do things.

Not much here
This is a very thin book, with a small number of recipes and many of those recipes do not contain enough detail about quality of EVERY ingredient and what should be done with EVERY ingredient to be of use to the novice cook. If you are an experienced cook, you will naturally assume what should be done when a step is sketchily described, but then if you are an experienced cook you will already knw how to prepare most of these recipes.

These ingredients are not related to hard times
The following ingredients recommended in this book are hardly those you would expect in Great Depression Cooking - 2 pints of whipping cream, one pound each of pork, beef and veal for a single recipe, two or three pounds of hamburger, a large chicken, roast ham and roast pork etc. These are almost luxury items, not hardship fare. I have put the book in my paper recycling bin.
