Color Me Beautiful's Looking Your Best: Color, Makeup and Style

Still the Best -- After All These Years
It's the end of 2007. I live in L.A., where staying on the cutting edge of fashion is practically blood sport (pun intended), and I can't believe I'm saying this: I bought this book on a whim. I found a cheap, used copy and thought, "Why not?" When I found tons of useful information, including the first correct "diagnoses" of my season AND my body type, I just about fell out of my chair.I've tried the original CMB, and the supposedly new-and-improved methods by Doris Pooser and Leatrice Eisemann. They don't hold a candle to this method of finding your best colors and styles. Instead of three color palettes (Eisemann), four (the original CMB), or six (Pooser), Spillane and Sherlock give us twelve to choose from, and a simple rule for expanding our palettes as designers present new colors. If, like me, you don't fit comfortably in the more limited seasonal/time-of-day systems, you'll find yourself here (people of color are included and well represented). When you find your best colors, wearing an actual color (instead of the ubiquitous black) makes you look and feel sophisticated, stylish, and au courant. This method even works when you want -- or need -- to blend in or present a conservative image. What a relief, and what a pleasure!Spillane and Sherlock don't just give advice on finding the best clothes for your figure; they actually include a formula. All you need is a tape measure to figure out your bodyline. Then, just follow their advice, and you're on your way.Other reviewers have mentioned the outdated illustrations and the crayon-style swatches. The bad news is that books, like styles, go out of date. The good news is that, armed with your favorite Internet search engine; the name of your new, expanded season; and a well-constructed search term (like, say, "cool summer" + swatches), you can find several ways to buy fabric swatches in this expanded seasonal color system. With this book and your fabric swatches in hand, you can't go wrong. And, maybe, if enough people ask for it, they'll publish a new edition of this book, or create a web site where styles and photos can be regularly updated.

Love Color!!!
It is a great book. Is more than just color is a guide that teachs how to look your best in an easy and uncomplicated wayThe color swatches listed for each palette are too small making it difficult to use when you are out shopping. It should also include swatches with the basic make up colors for each season.

Great continuation of Carole Jackson's original color theory, with expanded seasonal palettes
The expanded palettes are excellent, and the color and styling advice is outstanding. The makeup advice is spot-on, too. This should be recommended for every high school-age girl. My recommendation: spend a week in Home Economics class with the girls reading, discussing and applying the points of this book. The boys in Home Ec could do the same with the classic "Dress for Success for Men", and it would be life-changing, just as the original "Color Me Beautiful" was for me in the late 1980's.

This is an expansion of the original book.
This book is really helpful for those who are doing a deeper dive into the logic behind color choice in our makeup and wardrobes. I recommend. I also advise you to hurry, it's an older book and might be a bit hard to find. Shop today!

A must have to understand how to wear color
Must have to learn how to wear color, very understandable. There are many copies and reiterations of this book so take care not to buy 2 or 3 of the same infoThis book is a great book to understand and enter into the market. I bought the whole series and read them from cover to cover. This is not for the advanced student, but the beginner.I also think that fashion designers should have a thorough understanding of color theory, which is really not taught that much or well. It is also a very complex subject to learn and understand. BUT!!!!! There is hope!!!if you want to know about Color theory to get even better....COLOR WORKS, the crafter Guide to Color by Deb MenzFOR ANYONE who wants to know about Color Theory this test breaks it down so that ANYONE can understand this subject. I learned more about color theory in this book than all others put together because I now "Understand" the concept. While this book is for the textile artist, ALL artists should get it and is also has cut outs to use when choosing your colour palette whether it be for Fashion Design or Art.This book is a MUST HAVE!!!!

Good info, disappointing color swatches
The color swatches for this updated version of the original are disappointing. I bought one for myself and one for a gift, but felt I couldn't give the second one as a gift, because the color swatches were so difficult to determine exact coloration.

Wow...that color makes you glow...
Dated but it does give a basic guideline for colors most complemetary to one's coloring. Makes me think twice before buying a piece of clothing that will not flatter my hair, eyes, skin, etc. Small investment with a big payoff.

Best book on specific colors to bring out your own, individual beauty
I've never understood why everyone doesn't use color theory. I discovered the original "Color Me Beautiful" in the late 70's and have used it since then, but with refinements. Then I found "Color Me Beautiful's Looking Your Best" and realized I'd been refining my colors along the lines of what Mary Spillane did with subdividing the original 4 seasons into 12 divisions. This is the best way to use "your" colors, imo. It has deepened my understanding of color "seasons" and the subtleties of each season. I find I look better as I age and use my colors only, and have a deeper idea of how to use different colors in my season as my coloring fades as I get older. Truly a wonderful tool if you want to look good at all ages.
