Update: Unreliable
Updated Oct. 10, 2017 I've dropped this to one star. It is very unreliable. One cable it reports as being good actually is good. For five other cables, ranging in length from 1 meter to 30 meters in length, it reports that wires 13, 14, and 19 are open. The same break for five wires? I doubt it. All these cables work just fine. The last cable tested is actually broken but this gadget cannot make up its mind. Pin 1 is or isn't open (probably the cable has in intermittent contact so this gadget is reporting correctly).Oh yes, one nit. Red letters on an orange background. That is really hard to read.Original Review:I haven't had it long but, so far, it's working great. A cable that has been causing me problems actually is bad.My only issues are on the design front. It's on/off switch is way too easy to bump, even when it is in its case. This kills batteries. My other nit is that the remote part should clip onto the main part. This might prevent losing it between uses.

Superduper Useful
After a nearby lightning strike, my DirecTV posted an error that my TV didn't support the correct security. This little guy helped me suss out which HDMI cables and/or connectors were shot. Having zero experience with HDMI testers, it wasn't terribly clear to me if you could use this only on a cable, or to test a port with a cable plugged into it. You can test both cables and suspect ports. So when you determine you've got a good cable (plugging both ends into the main tester) you can then plug into whatever HDMI port you're testing (using either the main tester 'remote' slot or the smaller 'remote' tester itself) and figure out if things are working correctly. If all's well, and you have a high quality (fully wired) HDMI cable, every light will light up along with a bluish light indicating it's good. For my ports, about half of the lights were out and the tester indicated 'short' with a red light. So interestingly, the ports were what the lightning surge damaged, but the cables were completely fine.Don't expect much help from the inscrutable manual, but the device is simple enough to figure out on your own. For the money, I'd definitely recommend having one around if you're installing HDMI. It's nice knowing if that 8 year old awful looking cable is still going to do the job.

This is a great product to test HDMI cables
I'm finding several HDMI cables that are constantly failing that I've purchased from amazon... this product has saved me a lot of time from having to test the cables and put them behind the walls. If you are having issues with your picture, it might be your cables. Strangely HDMI cables go bad. Not good. This product will save you time and money. Return bad cables after testing them.

Great little HDMI tester
For the money, this little tester is an outstanding deal. Anyone who configures and installs their own HDMI devices should have one of these. I was able to instantly identify two broken conductors by pinout number, in a home theater projector HDMI cable that's installed in a wall and ceiling. The vast majority of HDMI cable problems that occur in previously working installations involve contact breaks at or near the connectors because connectors get moved and flexed when equipment needs servicing, lamp changes, etc. and my case was no exception. If an HDMI cable, even on a longer run like mine, has good continuity on all the pins, then it will work either straight up or with a signal booster almost all the time. I had considered getting a signal booster, but I didn't want to put a booster on a cable that had worked previously. If the problem is bad continuity, no signal booster can take zero signal and amplify nothing into a usable signal. With this little tester, I was able to identify which conductors were broken which was the first step in isolating the breaks that were close to the connector. Field termination and repair of HDMI cables is tedious and difficult, but not as bad as installing cables in walls and ceilings. Knowing which conductors were ok and which ones were bad was a huge help in finding the two breaks that were close to the plug and hidden under insulation and shielding. I also tested my entire HDMI cable inventory. I was able to identify a couple more cables (one of them brand new) that had defects. Imagine the frustration and potential damage to HDMI interfaces saved by not attempting to use a defective cable.Lots of things can cause HDMI problems, but this little tester helps you answer the most important and fundamental question, "Is there a connection?"

If you have HDMI devices at home - you should buy this tool !!
With HDMI being the default way of connecting satellite receivers, cable boxes, DVD and Blue Ray players to your TV's, having a way to help know when the cable is the problem is something that everyone should have handy. I ran into problem where the satellite receiver wouldnt book when connected to the TV. A call to the satellite provider support (big mistake on my part) resulted in blaming the TV as the problem (even though they had supplied the HDMI cable during installation). I finally unplugged the TV from the satellite receiver and what do you know, the receiver booted up just the way it should. I happened to have a spare HDMI cable and tried that. Had never one go bad before, so it hadnt crossed my mind that it could be the problem. Having this tester would have saved me over an hours worth of frustration and troubleshooting. This item is good enough to be included in a book of pocket sized troubleshooting tools. You will probably find a video review of this device on one of those services that only to that kind of thing. You should buy this today !!
