The best investment you can do for your child.
I taught my children to read more than 25 years ago when using Glen Doman's approach. I still give this book as a gift to friends whom have toddlers.

I used this book 34 years ago with my daughter ...
I used this book 34 years ago with my daughter ... started when she was 18 months old. At age 5 she was diagnosed by a team of psychologists to have an IQ of 160. And that she at age 5 was at reading level of a 7th grader. I truly believe it was due to this book.

I'm the product of this book.
To be upfront, I have neither purchased or read this book. My parents started teaching me to read when I was 18 months old, using the techniques taught in this book. I was reading chapter books before kindergarten, and in first grade, I read The Lonesome Gods by Louis Lamour in three days. I loved it! I believe that reading so much has made spelling easy for me, and English classes in general have been a breeze. I'm now 41 and have written several of my own books. I can't testify as to how perfectly my parents followed the directions, but I'd say this book works. You might need to find your kid something for math though too. That's where my struggle has been.

The best book to teach a child to read
We used an early edition of this book when our daughter was 12 months old. By the time Christmas came around when she was 18 months old she could read. At Christmas we put 35 flash cards in front of her and no matter which one we asked for she would bring it to us after looking them all over. She could read before she could talk. When in high school the AP Teacher asked if the students could remember when they started to read - she told the teacher that she could not remember when she could not read ;o)This book is a must for all parents wanting to give their children a leg up. Our daughter loved all of it and couldn't get enough of it. She taught her sister. It is win-win process of teaching a child to read. What can they not do once they can read? At age of 5 she had her first library card!

It's never too early to expose your child to reading
According to this book, little children (0-5 years old) are more intelligent and capable of learning than previously imagined. After it is understood that they have a huge amount of curiosity about the world around them, the authors strongly recommend enriching a child's environment by teaching them to read. The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential (the group behind this book) was begun to see if it was possible to teach brain-damaged children to read. In this case, "brain-damaged" means children whose brains were normal at conception, but were damaged through injury or disease. After discovering that the answer to their question was a resounding Yes, the same method was tried on well children, with the same result. For the average child, being able to explore their world, through crawling or walking, is vital to their development, so sticking them in a playpen with a bunch of toys, while understandable, is a bad idea. There is no "wrong" way to teach a child to read; the authors present their method, which involves writing words on flashcards in very large and bold print, and showing them to the child several times a day, for a few seconds at a time. It is never too early to start, even with children less than 1 year old. Do not be concerned if you cannot go "all the way" in teaching your child to read; even partial progress will help your child in the long run. Most importantly, the process should be joyous, and never a chore, for parent and child. If either one is cranky, or having a bad day, save the words for another day. This is an excellent book. Written for parents, it is very easy to understand, and shows that it is never too early to expose your child to the world of reading. It was also first published in the 1960s, so they must be doing something right. It is very much recommended.
