Mystery of the Maya (Choose Your Own Adventure #5)

Fun for Reluctant Readers
Mystery of the Maya gives readers an exciting glimpse of ancient Mayan society and a thrillingly unconventional journey through the pages of a book. As in all Choose Your Own Adventure books, the reader must frequently decide between various plot alternatives, flipping through the pages of the book to follow one particular storyline or another. Told in the second person, Choose Your Own Adventures permit "you," the reader, to face death, arrest or untold glory in a way that makes reading unexpected and very entertaining. This book is great fun for reluctant readers, who will enjoy the adventures in time travel, human sacrifice, warrior initiation and great financial success.

Loved introducing this series to my son
Loved introducing this series to my son! My husband and I read the book several times over that night and reminisced over all the stories we’d read as children.

This is a review of #11
I read this book in the old series, back when it was #11, and I remember it because it was one of the first few of these kind of books I ever got.The good thing about this book is that it encourages the young reader to be interested in something outside of the story itself. In this case, it is in learning about the Mayan culture and what happened to its civilization.I probably read this about 30 years ago, and maybe 5 years ago, when there was a special about what happened to the Mayan people on PBS or something, I was TOTALLY down to watch it. Turns out, they deforested too much, according to the theory supported by this show.I remember this book also had interesting educational tidbits that were reasonably well worked into the story, and the illustrations were also great. Honestly, I don't think this series would have worked nearly as well without the excellent illustrations. This book is definitely in the top half of all CYOA books that I have read, and probably in the top 25%.

Interesting
A nice concept, but in some endings, your character ends up dying.
