Landscape Painting in Watercolor

This stuff isn’t on YouTube
I’ve only gone over the first 20 or so pages, but already love this book. The first lesson (he doesn’t just expect you to read his opinions, he gives you homework so you can figure things out for yourself) asks you to copy his simple landscape sketch and paint it several times, each time using a different selection of 3 colors. The purpose of this is to teach you relationships of colors, mixing, and the feelings obtained with different pallet choices. Yes, most of the photos are black and white - the book is from the 1970s - but I don’t think this will matter much.By the way: I was going to skip the introductory section, as every instructor covers the same junk about tools and materials, right? Well I decided to skim thru it anyway, and lo and behold, I read something new! I highly recommend this book. You won’t find this stuff on YouTube.

A great book for landscape watercolor artists and fans on Zoltan
A great book for landscape watercolor artists and fans of Zoltan. Only wish more of the pictures were in color. As I understand it, Zoltan had most of the pictures done n black & white to keep price low. Also this was done before the age of YouTube.

all are very useful. An older book
This book has many small exercises and practice tasks to help build a repertoire of skills for the landscape painter; all are very useful. An older book, but nevertheless worth finding and adding to the collection!

One Of My Favorite Watercolor Books!
This is an important book for both those new to watercolor and those who are experienced artists. The book offers many useful and quite unique tips and techniques -- along with thorough explanations as to why. I first learned of Zoltan Szabo through Sterling Edwards (Zoltan was his mentor). I've had the very good fortune to study with several of the greats in watercolor. Szabo's masterful talent is easily recognized as well as his quite individual approach to this medium. You'll likely find information here that you won't find elsewhere. This book is a winner.

Another Keeper
I had seen this at the library and skipped over it because some of the demos are in black and white and I'm more into the "color" in watercolor. But on closer inspection I discovered that many of the black and whites were steps one and two of the demos but steps three, showing the completed painting were in color. After buying it I discovered that the black and white also taught the different values used in each example.

Disappointed
I was disappointed that the copy of this book that I received was black and white. I am sure this watercolor instruction book was actually professionally printed in color but mine looked like a copy printed off a home printer and stuck in the book binding. The information is good but very low quality book. Don’t buy this. Save your money.

Learn from one of the best
This book contains a wealth of information that's especially helpful to a beginning painter like me. It was a bit disappointing tosee so many illustrations in black and white, but I was prepared for this having read another review before my purchase. Oneneeds to go through the book slowly and do the exercises to learn from a master of the art.

Cheap Quality with few colour pages.
I get excited about getting watercolor books in the mail. As a 20-year veteran painter, I know that I will always have more to learn, and as Zoltan Szabo is a master painter, I anticipated a lot from this book. It was disappointing then to open the book and realize there are only about a dozen colour pages in the entire book. The paper is thin, cheap bond and for a visual person who learns best by studying the images and step-outs in painting demonstrations, the black & white illustrations are a let-down.

Wonderful reference by a superb and classic artist!
Wonderful reference; Zoltan's instructions are clear and concise; his techniques and methods are very easily followed and wonderfully explained; should be in the description that most of the book is in black and white
