Poly Mx-10 Headset Switcher Multimedia Amplifier

Would be 5 stars except.....
This is a very useful SOHO headset amplifier. It allows you to switch between the telephone and your computer's audio (voip) or Messenger audio etc.) using the same headset. It should be noted that you must use one of the professional Plantronics telephone system headsets and not a PC headset or cordless/cellular headset. The Plantronic headsets are very good but have different connectors than standard cordless/cellular headsets.Only problem is, this unit has had a slight humming line noise when used with the telephone since it was new. Since my phone wasn't on the official Plantronics compatibility list, I assumed that my low cost phone was probably to blame.I just replaced my old phone with a two line AT&T 992 SOHO phone that should be compatible - it's not on Plantronic's compatibility list, but there are SO many phones out there I don't know how they could possibly check all phones on the market (or even a fraction of them). After all, it's nearly impossible to look at the compatiblity list and try to buy a phone that meets your needs and is also on the list. The MX-10 is supposed to have "near universal compatibility".This new phone has the same line hum as the old phone (both are AT&T phones).I sent for a replacement MX-10, so we'll see if there's a problem with the amplifier or a compatiblity issue with both of my AT&T phones. The headset is crystal clear when used through the soundcard of the computer in all of the audio programs that I use.

It does work, but not much excitement
I just bought an MX10 a few days ago. The good news it works. Another good news it came with an AC power adaptop, so I don't need to replace batteries anymore. Here is what I don't like:1. Price. If you look at this device and at it's price tag, they don't seem to be a good fit.2. Proprietary head speakers. The amplifier will work with pretty much any desk phone, but it requires proprietary Plantronics head speakers and they are way more expensive then competitors.3. You can feed one input from the phone and the other one from the computer. You can also let your phone party listen you computer music when you put your phone on mute. But you can't mix 2 signals. You can't talk over your computer signal and let the person on the phone listen to both. Also, you can't feed your phone signal into the computer. Adding an ability to mix signal would allow you to record/replay sound from the computer/phone.Overall, this amplifier does basic functionality ok, it might meet your expectations but unlikely will exceed.

Falls short of expectations...
I bought this particular amplifier because I wanted to only use one headset whether I was using the phone line or VoIP. I have used many other Plantronics headsets and amps in the past while working as a supervisor at a call center, and never had any issues with any of them. This amp produces a background hum over the headset at all times, which is noticeable by callers. I have tested it with several different phones that all required different settings to work, and the hum is there on all of them, even with different headsets. It's not as bad on VoIP, and it wasn't worth returning the amp over, as it gets the job done. I just have it hooked up to the phone that uses setting #4, as it seems to hum the softest. All in all, a very versatile amp, but the sound quality is a letdown compared to past Plantronics equipment. I would recommend one of their other amps, but not this one. If it is necessary for you to be able to use a single amp for both, then this is probably your only option...just buy it knowing the cons against it too.

not useful
This might perhaps be a good product, but it will only work with a headset that has a quick-release plug. I have not found such a headset -- even the headset I have from Plantronics has the normal 2.5mm plug (and that one is loud enough so that it doesn't need any amplification). I've tried adding on an adapter, but adding extra adapters and connectors can ruin the sound quality or make sound output too weak for anyone to hear. This amplifier plugs into the phone's handset jack instead of into a 2.5mm/3.5mm headset jack -- this means you have to pick up the receiver and set it down somewhere whenever you want to make or answer a call, instead of just pressing a button to use the phone's headset feature.

Mind-numbing buzz made this unusable for me.
Was hoping to use the MX10 to provide better control for my calls and to record some calls but it is comletely unusable because during the dialing and the call there is a low-frequency buzz which is very loud for me and very present for my listeners on the other end.I connected this, as specified, to a compatible ATT phone and a Plantronics Supraplus HW251 PLUS MONAURAL/VT HEADSET. There are six settings for pairing the unit to various phones. Settings 1, 5, and 6 all worked with my phone, but all have the same level buzz. Unusable.I did not find any info or response from Plantronics about this and there were others who have experienced the same issue.Plantronics tends to produce great products in my experience, but I can't recommend this unit.

Not worth the box it is packed in...
There must be better products on the market. I bought this item because it was compatible with my hardware and would work with both my PC and my phone. I did give it 2-stars because it actually does switch between the PC and phone and it does amplify something. However, this amplifier creates a lot of noise that makes the audio experience much worse than the unamplified signal, regardless of the setting of the dip switch. Thank goodness for the efficiency and ease of Amazon's return process!

Sincerely, disapointed
I ordered this to use with my plantronics headset in the office. I also wanted to run my computer audio through it but alas that was not to be. First of all, the audio level from the computer was barely audible. And yes, the volume from the computer was all the way up and the cable was plugged into the right jack. Even tried both the front and rear audio jacks. Once that failure was behind me I settled on just using it as a line amp for my headset. That worked for a month or so before one day the caller could barely hear me. I tried all of the different modes but nothing seemed to remedy the problem. Ended up buying the Vista M22 and so far so good.

returned it
i have tried this with 3 different models of phones. each and every one had a large amount of background hiss and echo. in addition the cord which goes from the MX10 to the phone base is extremely short. it made positioning it on my desk annoying. i returned it several days later after speaking to plantronics customer support. i was using a plantronics headset with it and verified that there were no comparability issues.
